There are over 2000 acupuncture points that are located throughout the outer surface of the body. These points are sometimes referred to as acu-points and are organized into 14 main channels. These channels can be likened to streams of energy (called Qi) that control the body's functions. Most of the channels are named after the organ systems they run through (Stomach, Liver, Spleen, etc). The structure of Oriental medicine is organized differently from Western medicine and disorders are often named according to the different channels involved. Most acupuncture treatments will include acupuncture points on the involved channels as well as other points on related channels.
